The auricle  has a circular shape. The circular shape is maintained by 2 Main structures called helix and antihelix on the lateral side of the auricle. The anti helix bends the auricle backwards. Prominent ear is a disorder which the anti helix structure is not visible. And there’s no antihelix the auricle protrudes laterally and becomes prominent. This situation causes psychological effects especially in kids and teenagers.

Prominent ear surgery can be done at 5th year of life. A 2 cm  incision is made on the posterior side of the ear and the excessive skin is removed and then a number of manipulations made on the cartilage such as scoring and cochal setback. These manipulations reduce the tension on the cartilage and provides stability to the new shape of the auricle. Additionally absorbable stitches applied to the tension points so that the new shape is secured. If these manipulations are made without reducing the tension of the cartilages, the auricle will eventually turn back to its original position and shape. The wound is dressed for one week after the operation and after the dressing is removed the patient is free to turn back to normal life. The whole procedure leaves no visible scar.

Many variations of prominent ear surgery have been described. Some surgeons use permanent stitches which cannot be dissolved. And if this kind of sutur materials are used, wound infections or foreign body reactions may occur in the surgical field months after the operation. we want to avoid such complications by using tension reduction manipulations and we support these maneuvers by absorbable suture materials

How do I prepare for surgery?

No special preparation before the surgery is needed. Photographs of the ears are taken for the surgery. Pre-operative photographs help with the demonstration of  the change after the surgery.  The prominent ear surgery can be performed under general or local anesthesia. It takes about an hour for a two-sided surgery.  One week of dressing should be worn after the surgery. It is usually a painless process. And the effect of the surgery is permanent. 

What age can otoplasty surgery be done?

Otoplasty can be done after 5-6 years of age.

When do i get to work?
